The UK's legal sector has launched a major new climate change initiative that should see almost a third of solicitors and law firms in England and Wales announce public carbon emissions targets.
The Law Society's Legal Sector Alliance (LSA) group, which currently boasts 215 member firms that have publicly committed to measure their carbon footprint, announced yesterday that members of the group would now move to implement carbon reduction targets.
The 20 executive members of the LSA have agreed to become the first to announce public emission targets, with the rest of the group expected to follow suit in the coming months.
Speaking to BusinessGreen, a spokeswoman for the Law Society said that having successfully measured their carbon footprint using the LSA's standardised protocol for measuring the carbon footprint of law firms, many of the group's members were already delivering emission reductions.
"The new initiative will encourage members to now set public targets for their emission reductions," she said, adding that each firm would be able to pick its own target based on its individual circumstances.
"LSA members have consistently taken a leadership position on climate change and we recognise that by publicly committing to carbon reduction targets, we are continuing to drive change and real carbon reduction across the profession," said LSA chairman Sir Nigel Knowles in a statement. "Meeting our climate change obligations will be increasingly challenging but our members recognise the increasing moral and business imperative for doing so."
